River bank strengthening using combined materials - Burton, Nottinghamshire
Client Private client
Project period October 2006
Project outline Around 50 linear metres of river bank were eroding in the client's garden due to defoliation. The installation of coir rolls, willow and other marginal flora was recommended to stabilise the worst affected areas. Willow walls were installed in 3 sections to create terraces and prevent further soil slippage.
Services provided

Approximately 40m of coir rolls were installed at the base of the bank and staked into position. Over 300 wetland plants were planted above the coir rolls to stabilise the soil. Three living willow walls up to 0.5 metres high were constructed at stepped elevations to create terraces to retain soil and produce ledges for planting. All materials were carried to the work area to prevent vehicle damage to lawns etc.

Anti-erosion work in a private garden on the River Trent, Nottinghamshire

Revetment works on the River Trent 3 months after installation

Update:

The river can rise to over 3m at the point of work. The reinforcements undertaken have already been tested in the heavy flooding in the summer of 2007 - they have stood up very well to being completely flooded and have proved resistant to erosion.
