Erosion Control Using Willow

Erosion control of waterside banks using willow.

Willow has been used for generations to stabilise banks along rivers, lakes, watercourses and canals.

Willow spiling can be used to prevent water eroding river banks

Recently there has been a revival in using willow as a 'soft' engineering solution to erosion problems by planning authorities and engineers. Willow costs a fraction of the price of concrete and metal piling methods. Soft engineering methods are sensitive to the environment as other plant species can grow through, animals can still access earth banks and they are particularly appropriate where access to the site is restricted as they require little or no machinery in their construction.

JPR Environmental employs five principal methods of erosion control

Live willow hurdles will grow and stabilise the banks, preventing erosion

These methods of water erosion control are sustainable through their use of natural materials and the low impact on surrounding wildlife.

If you are unsure about what appropriate remedial work is required to prevent water erosion in your circumstances then we can arrange for a qualified River Engineer to assess your needs.

JPR Environmental supplies a range of materials, including live willow, coppiced hazel and coir rolls to prevent water erosion. We also offer a full nationwide installation service using highly experienced staff.

JPR Environmental has undertaken a wide range of erosion control projects for both public and private clients. Examples are shown in our sister company's website 'Previous work'.
